METAL DETECTOR MEETS DEMANDS FOR HIGH LEVEL ACCREDITATION & CODE OF PRACTICE (COP)
Cake (Lomond Foods Ltd) is a family owned business set up in 2011 to produce homemade cakes, scones and traybakes of the best quality. Today it is run by Lauren Ingram the daughter of owners Sam and Barbara Henderson. Every product from Cake is made by hand using the best free range eggs and then carefully packaged into 100% recyclable packaging. With a focus on quality and safety, the business wanted to seek a suitable Check & Detect solution, and so they contacted Loma.
Challenges for Cake
With their business growing quickly and supplying a greater number of customers, Cake already had many QC checks in place for improved efficiency, however they wanted an automated quality process to replace their visual checking process.
It needed to be a long-term solution to support their quality policy and to enable them to have processes in place to the same standard as larger manufacturers.
The business made the decision to achieve SALSA accreditation (Safe and Local Sourcing Accreditation) as a step in their quality development and to increase customer confidence. Although the need for a metal detection was not a requirement of the standard, the Directors at Cake decided to source a metal detector as part of their Food Safety Plan for a Critical Control Point.
Cake needed a metal detector solution that would enable the automatic checking of cooked bakery products. The requirement was for reliable detection at all times with limited false rejects.
This would play a part in meeting standards and further reassuring customers of the controls and importance that Cake places on the identification and removal of foreign bodies. For Cake, it was also a requirement to have an affordable solution from a reputable company.
Inspection detection needed for:
- Detect metal contaminants of ferrous, non-ferrous and stainless steel to various sizes from 2mm to 7mm.

A Loma metal detector solution was proposed to Cake as it would meet their needs of delivering reliability in checking for metal contaminants including ferrous, non-ferrous and stainless steel. The machine was an ideal investment as an affordable Check & Detect solution to enable Cake to have as part of their Safety Policy and to ensure they met many of the retailers' COP (Code of Practice) standards required.
Anne McDonald, Technical Manager, Cake says:
"Loma equipment is installed in some of the largest food manufacturing companies working to retailer standards as well as BRC and other Global Food Safety Initiative Programmes. However, as a smaller manufacturer we find that the service and support from Loma is robust and timely to ensure we have continual cover."
“Our team adapted to the metal detector extremely well and they are proficient in their knowledge and skill in the operation of the equipment. Externally our customers are confident that at Cake we are in control of this important foreign body identification and removal process. Our Environmental Officer is very pleased that we have this level of inspection control in place."
