Loma launches super compact X5 Spacesaver X-ray inspection system

8 Sep 2014

Designed with a 25% improved detection performance and 20% smaller footprint the NEW X5 Spacesaver offers low cost of ownership, is easy to use with a ultra-hygienic design.

Adhering to Loma’s ‘Designed to Survive’ ethos and delivering maximum uptime at a low lifetime cost of ownership, the company’s exciting new X5 Spacesaver X-ray, which measures only one metre in length, has been engineered to deliver industry leading levels of product integrity for the busiest of food processing and packing lines while enabling customers to reclaim valuable floor space.

Incorporating Adaptive Array Technology (AAT), Loma’s X5 Spacesaver offers 25% improved detection performance. This new technology tailors resolution, depth and scaling to give the best performance for any product requiring inspection. AAT eliminates the previous need to specify the diode array pixel size as the X5 Spacesaver will adjust to give ultimate detection performance for the product.

Capable of operating at line speeds up to 75 metres per minute, the X5 Spacesaver X-ray detects and rejects foreign body contaminants such as bone, metal fragments, glass, stones, bone, plastics and ceramics. The system can identify improperly packaged product for: size, shape, length, fill level, component count and presence; all essential quality control elements for food processors. It offers large margins for minimum false rejects for previously undetectable contaminants, reducing errors and costs of re-inspection.

With significant energy saving benefits, the stainless steel X5 Spacesaver is more rugged than previous models boasting IP66 ingress protection and enhanced resistance to static discharge. The driver software has increased control over the dynamic range allowing Loma to implement a new Eco Mode exploiting sensitivity to produce excellent detection results and one of the lowest X-ray energies in the industry.

A new quick release belt comes as standard. Measuring two metres in length, the tension can be released for cleaning under the belt or to completely remove it without tools. In fact, for changeovers, a single person can remove and replace the belt for cleaning in less than 30 seconds –a task that can take up to half an hour in competitive systems.

For further ease of cleaning and reduced maintenance, the Spacesaver X5 X-ray also offers rounded, sloping surfaces to stop food particles and washdown droplets accumulating in crevices. The intuitive touch screen has IP69K rating while the belt is FDA/EU approved ensuring the entire system is designed to withstand high pressure washdown applications.

The streamlined cabinet has very few external components making it easier to clean and has been lowered to make it easier to manoeuvre around manufacturing lines. Its small footprint averts unnecessary congestion while giving production managers the flexibility to constantly refine and configure factory floor layouts to avoid manufacturing bottlenecks.

A revolutionary new cooling mechanism and increased insulation within the X-ray tank leads to cooler transformer fluid temperatures for longer tank life and less frequent fluid changes.

To aid serviceability, there is improved access to all the internal components via a front and back door, an internal light inside the cabinet for enhanced visibility and a new slide out tank mechanism. Plus the X5 Spacesaver does not circulate oil around the system for lower complexity and there are less conveyor rollers and bearings to maintain.

Modular in design, and fitted with the latest Alan Bradley electronics, the system can be retrofitted to work alongside existing production and inspection equipment. Depending on production requirements, a reject system or checkweigher can also be added.

The Loma Spacesaver X5 offers automated set up, remote diagnostics and features an intuitive graphical touch screen display, with multiple language options. The system is available in belt widths ranging from 300mm to 500mm.

The X5 PC has been migrated to Windows Embedded Standard operating system and continued support from Microsoft. It has a high speed USB sensor and simple Ethernet connection for easy reporting. As with all Loma’s products, customers benefit from a high level of before and after sales service and receive a tailor made solution to their X-ray inspection requirements.
