With more manufacturers moving eastwards after the expansion of the EU in May last year, Loma has followed suit by opting for a base closer to its customers. At an official opening ceremony on 2nd December 2004, the Mayor of Dobrany, Mr. Jaroslav S_kora and Mr Jim Webster, Business Director of Spectris plc cut the ribbon at Loma Systems s.r.o. and welcomed its 50 employees to the new site. The operation, headed up by Vit Chomát, will manufacture a range of Loma inspection equipment, drawing on a solid base of local suppliers to provide customers in Central and Eastern Europe with shorter lead times and more local point of contact. The successful ‘Lean’ world class manufacturing techniques practiced at Loma’s operations in the UK and the Netherlands will be mirrored in Dobrany to drive cost efficiency and minimise inventory requirements. Loma is committed to achieving growth in its global markets and the opening of Dobrany follows hot on the heels of the expansion of the Helmond operation last year. Watch

The new system will minimise the need for additional processing and allow accurate metal detection checks to take place without affecting product quality or output. The compact VEMAG PipeLine fits on a standard hinge of the meat pump between the pump itself and the Linker. With a fully integrated drive unit, the metal detector checks the raw sausage meat in the pipeline for metal contaminants before it is fed through to a VEMAG portioning machine. The system also benefits from an easy release handle to enable detachment for cleaning purposes and software that tracks changes in product conductivity. Chilled food is the fastest growing market sector in most countries, and the UK is no exception. As retailers clamour to satisfy the consumer’s demand for convenience by introducing an ever-greater range of products, the spotlight falls on suppliers to guarantee food safety. At Marks & Spencer, Senior Food Technologist Nick Holloway was keen to explore the newest technology on the market and made the most of Loma’s equipment loan system to trial Celsius. Here’s what he had to say:

|
“Many thanks for the loan of the Celsius non-invasive temperature monitor. I have demonstrated the equipment to many of the M&S technical team and suggested that they highlight the potential benefits of this type of equipment to their suppliers. From my part, as the food technologist with end-to-end responsibility for the cold chain at M&S, this is the equipment that the industry has been waiting for - non-invasive, accurate, centre temperature measurement with a software package to capture results for due diligence purposes, without the financial penalty of throwing the product away after each test. I hope we see more suppliers taking up this equipment in the future.” Thanks Nick - we couldn’t have put it better ourselves!

Some M&S suppliers are already advocates of the Celsius system, which uses microwave thermometry to obtain a fast, accurate temperature reading and allows test products to be put straight back into circulation for sale to the customer.
