Food safety and quality are paramount to De Keyser so the company called
upon Loma in September 2004 to support them in maintaining high standards
by ensuring no metal particles contaminated their product. By April
2005 the company had a total of three pipeline metal detectors and four
conveyor belt metal detectors installed at the Belgian production sites.
In addition to this, two conveyor belt detectors were installed at the
French site in Lens. These tightened quality standards in 2004 were in part due to De Keyser’s application to receive a British Retail Consortium (BRC) certification. The BRC is a local trade association for the UK retail industry, which represents approximately 80 – 90% of retailers in the UK. To be eligible for the certificate, De Keyser needed to install metal detectors across all of its production lines. |

Kris Francoys, Director at De Keyser explained,
“Until 2004 we had been using a competitors conveyor belt detectors
in our Belgian site which only covered a limited number of our production
lines. Since then our company has grown, and we now supply to large
retailers, wholesalers and slicing companies. For this reason, coupled
with our BRC accreditation, we have to ensure we take all necessary
steps to provide quality assured products without the risk of contamination.” Francoys continued, “Before using Loma’s machines we had incidents where some of our slicing customers found metal fragments in our products. For example we use metal clips on a number of our sausage products, so there was always a risk that debris from the clips could fall into the products. It was almost impossible to determine whether the metal was in the products before they reached the customer or whether it came from their slicing tools. We have overcome this problem now thanks to Loma’s metal detectors.” Sausages are one of De Keyser’s key product lines where both clipped and twisted sausages are produced. Loma’s pipeline metal detectors have been installed on both De Keyser’s clipped and twisted sausage production lines. On the twisted sausage line, the pipeline detector is attached to a Handtmann meat stuffer, a linkerdrive developed by Loma in partnership with Handtmann, which turns and twists the sausages to close them. There are also conveyor belt metal detectors are used on products that are packed into trays and are placed just in front of the labelling line. Francoys concluded, “We are delighted we chose Loma to assist in our production. They have met all our contaminant detection requirements and have helped us reach improved levels of customer satisfaction. We are looking forward to continuing our partnership with Loma.” |

To meet the intensive demands of modern production,
Spectrum Inspection Systems has recently restructured its Service Department.
The whole of the UK is now divided simply into North and South territories
with 22 highly experienced service engineers on hand to quickly and
efficiently resolve any inspection equipment issues. The new structure will allow customers to benefit from much faster engineer response times which is extremely important in today’s ‘24/7’ manufacturing environment where any production downtime can cause major disruption to planned output and can consequently be very costly. Understanding the detrimental effects of machinery breakdowns, Spectrum’s engineers are not only extensively skilled in servicing their own machinery, but are also capable of repairing any other brand of inspection equipment. So, in essence one service contract fits all – giving customers peace of mind when it comes to reliability and visible costs. In addition, Spectrum ensures consistent levels of support and service, with its engineers dedicated to specific customers – allowing them to build up a thorough understanding of their businesses. |

|
Spectrum’s Service Department offers a comprehensive reactive service
with the option for 24 hour callout, as well as packages which include
Planned Preventative Maintenance and remote diagnostics and troubleshooting.
This facility can also encompass discounts on spare parts, refurbishment
and upgrades of existing equipment, hire and loan equipment, training
and second hand machinery sales.
With just one point of contact, guaranteed faster response times and wide-ranging service options, Spectrum Inspection Systems customers can be assured of consistently high levels of support to help keep their businesses on target and running efficiently. |

Greetings from Turkey – straddling the
continents of Europe and Asia Turkey’s strategic location has given
it major influence in the region and since its tough economic recovery
programme initiated in 2002, economic growth has averaged over 5%
and inflation has fallen dramatically. |
||||
|
Cem Telkes of Tamay dis Ticaret Ltd commented: “We have been working
with Loma for over seven years and in that time we have seen the Turkish
economy move from strength to strength. The stability of the economy
over the past three years has triggered an enormous amount of investment
and increased business volumes, especially in the food industry. With
exports to EU countries increasing, Turkish food operators are required
to ensure that all products reaching the EU are safe and so are obliged
to implement a number of self-checking programmes and HACCP principles.
As a result there is a huge demand for good quality, reliable and accurate
inspection systems including checkweighing solutions as many global
food and pharmaceutical companies look to invest in or expand their
operations in Turkey.
| ![]() |
||||
“In
particular, ISO, HACCP, EFSIS and BRC are impacting on the investments
companies are making in order to comply with European standards, and
metal detectors and X-ray systems play a major role. Due to the lower
investment costs metal detectors are still the number one sellers, although
demand for X-ray technology is growing.” Torquil Mackintosh is also excited by the prospects in store from this rapidly emerging Turkish market. He said: “We have seen steady business growth since 2003 and our greater focus on specific market requirements has resulted in a year-on-year growth of about 70 percent. With such excellent products to offer the market, we now have a defined performance strategy, which offers Turkish customers cost-effective inspection solutions and an unrivalled level of after-sales service. So far, our products and service offering is outperforming our competitors in Turkey and we are now recognised market leaders in metal detection, X-rays and checkweighing. “This rapid growth has also resulted in the expansion of the team based in Istanbul and in September 2005 a new Sales Engineer, Hakan Oguz, joined us to react to the high demand for our products and to concentrate on the Loma brand. Hakan is a highly experienced engineer who previously worked for one of our competitors in the food inspection and weighing industry. All in all, we are experiencing great success here in Turkey and are looking forward to an exciting and prosperous future.” |
